Dishonest Auto-Renewal - Customer Service and Billing

After purchasing my 2nd MagicJack and setting it up, I was happy with the service. This was until I received an email saying that it was due for "AUTO-RENEWAL" and that $20.01 would be charged to my credit card on the date etc.

Of course I was caught totally off guard since I always believe in a company firstly SEEKING your approval before charging anything to your credit card...not just telling you "Hey...I'm going to charge this to your credit card". I contacted MagicJack on this issue and their representative told me that the default feature on the MagicJack setting is set to "Auto-Renew". I was never aware of this and MagicJack made no effort in informing the customer of this. I find this default "Auto-Renew" setting to be extremely audacious and very dishonest and not forthcoming whatsoever for MagicJack's service. Very disappointing.

Same here. I had the standard magic jack and didn't renew when I received a notice almost a year ago. Today, I noticed a entry for $32.29 on my bank statement. Called right away and asked why they'd bill me when I (1) refused to renew when I received their email notice that I needed to renew or service would turn off, (2) I didn't renew and the device stopped working, (3) I threw away the device after it stopped service and haven't used once since, (4) I wasn't on any auto-renew before I always had to renew, (5) they arbitrarily triggered a renew, presumably because they thought I wouldn't notice the debit. I'm familiar with the consumer protection laws as well and I'm not a lawyer. This is very deceptive....it's the first time any auto debit has come out...and this came nearly a year after I decided not to renew when I received an email notice that I should renew. How deceptive.

Same happened to me. Dishonest business practice... good technical product but really shady company practice. Why not send renewal notice and let customer renew, change credit card, use paypal etc.. Autorenew?? BS. really shady to the point of being crooked.
